The textbook is arranged into three sections:

  • Section 1 (Chapters 1—3) describe the relationship between research and evidence-based practice, provides an overview of the research process, compares quantitative and qualitative research approaches, and discusses ethical considerations in research.
  • Section 2 (Chapters 5—13) considers each element in the research process in depth. The focus of these chapters is developing an understanding of the methodological and analytical decisions that are a part of the research process so that nurses can understand what a study is reporting, evaluate its relevance and credibility, make decisions about its applicability to a clinical situation, and participate as members of research teams.
  • Section 3, the final section of the book (chapter 14—18), discusses the research critique process, nurses’ roles in conducting research in practice settings, communicating research findings, translating research findings into a practice change, and the future of nursing research.

 Features:

  • Each chapter in the book includes several examples from the current nursing research literature, particularly emphasizing studies that appear in the clinically oriented, peerreviewed journals that practicing nurses are most likely to read.
  • Boxes and tables are used to highlight and illustrate key points, as well as to provide alternative perspectives on an issue.
  • UNIQUE:  Concise end-of-chapter summary, sample test questions, critical thinking questions, and a list of Internet resources.
  • A comprehensive glossary at the end of the textbook serves as a ready reference for bolded terms that are used throughout the book.
  • Additional critical thinking exercises, review questions, and further learning and teaching resources tied to the chapter material are available to students and instructors at www.mynursingkit.com
