Features

Problem-solving, real-world approach:

  • Over thirty “what works” case-study exhibits (dozens added)–covers real-life police success stories using tangible examples and reinforces the text’s theme
  • An experienced author provides an inside look at the world of policing–Peak explains policing based on his more than thirty years of experience as a police practitioner, trainer, teacher and scholar

  • “Learn by Doing” sections in each chapter–these chapter scenarios and activities place the student in hypothetical situations, allowing them to practice skills in communication and self-management, act as a problem-solver, and learn and communicate about/address current methods, issues, and problems

General Changes

In addition to having been updated throughout and new materials added, this eighth edition contains some minor rearranging of chapters. Specifically, reviewers felt it would be better to have some of the more “attention-grabbing” chapters moved to the beginning of the book. Therefore, Part I now has three chapters that discuss the history of policing in the U.S. as well as recruiting, training, and deploying police on patrol. The two chapters discussing federal/state/local police organization and management (formerly Chapters 2 and 3) have been moved to the rear of the book (now Chapters 10 and 11). Also, the number of chapters has been reduced to 14, with the stand-alone chapter on futures (formerly Chapter 15) being deleted. Fifty exhibits, figures, and tables also explicate the material and demonstrate “what works” with such problems as terrorism, gangs, and crimes involving drugs, hate, and/or youth. The “Learn by Doing” and “Career Profile” features also greatly enhance its practical and applied theme and engage students.
