New “Help I Need A Job!” is designed to give the students, from an employer’s point of view, insight into what employers from various career areas look for in the application and interview process. Students see first hand what experienced, higher level job recruiters look for in potential employees as well as what questions are most commonly asked for the application, and during the interview. Students will explore the impact that math has on every aspect of their success in a non-intimidating way with answers to activities that are presented in each chapter relative to the concepts of the chapter. New “Social Media … Making Connections” is designed to provide insight into social media and how the use of social media can be an asset and led to student success. The benefits, problems, as well as the use of social media that lead to a successful college experience are presented with effective applications that apply to the educational environment. New How the habitual use and the additive nature of social media has caused tremendous problems for many students and threatened their success. Students benefit by developing an appreciation of the problem, assess their own use of social media, and discover solutions and various helpful resources to this emerging societal problem. New “Tips for Success” summaries chapter concepts and provides specific steps to take to succeed in these areas. Students benefit by having a short summary of the chapter with a bulleted lists of helpful recommendations that led to success. (Ex. – within Each Chapter, it is a new chapter thread).
New section “Alcohol, Drugs, Food, Caffeine, Tobacco, etc. etc. etc….” explores addiction in a non-threatening way and provides self-assessment activities for students or their friends, it provides insight into a students compulsive nature and what leads to addiction. Revised section Stress is problematic for many students. This helps students understand stress and how they can use stress in a positive way. Students benefit by creating an appreciation of stress and understanding how to deal with it and how to turn it into a positive emotion in their lives. Dr. Charles T. Muse, Sr. retired as the VP for Academic Affairs at Florence-Darlington Technical College in 2008 and is currently the Executive Director of the National Robotics Training Center. Dr. Muse retired from the U.S. Marine Corps at the rank of Colonel with 31 years of active and reserve duty. He has authored and co-authored over fifty articles and four text books to include The Prentice Hall Planner: A Time Management System for Student Success, Prentice Hall, 2003 and A Planner for Student Success, Pearson Publishing, 2011.
Ms. Debi McCandrew
is the Department Head for Mathematics and Computer Technology at Florence-Darlington Technical College. Ms. McCandrew has earned the following awards: the South Carolina’s Technical Educator of the Year; the South Carolina Governor’s Distinguished Professor of the Year; Florence-Darlington Technical College’s faculty member of the year; Certificate of Merit from the National Academic Advising Association; and the NISOD Excellence Award for distinguished performance in teaching. Ms. McCandrew is the co-author of Roadways to Success, a student success textbook.
Dr. James C. Williamson retired from Higher Education in 2008 after 28 years. He served as President of two community colleges and held numerous other positions within the higher education community, in both public, private, two-year and four year institutions. His research interest in the area of Gerontology led him to a second career in the long-term, senior-care business. He currently serves as Chief Human Capital Officer for Agape Senior, a 1300 employee company focusing on the needs of senior adults. Dr. Williamson’s extensive higher education experience, combined with his current work in the private sector, gives him “real word perspective” with this edition. Dr. Williamson is the author of journal articles on student success, was the lead author in editions 2, 3 and 4 and is the creator of “Agape University” an on-line, interactive training facility for Agape Senior.
